Added on 12 July 2021
Widmerpool will be the base for a Velo 99 Cycle race event next month.
The event on Sunday August 15 will be run from the Keyworth Rugby Club ground on the Widmerpool Circuit which will also include Wysall and Willoughby on the Wolds. It will start at 10am and end two hours later.
Velo 99 run a series of cycle races, normally 13 in total each year. The Widmerpool Road Race is one of that series, using a circuit between Widmerpool, Wysall and Willoughby on the Wolds. The Velo 99 is a race series for invited riders only.
The aim of Velo 99 is "to provide a race series wherein competitors can safely race, comfortable in knowing that their fellow competitors and riders are responsible, careful and friendly".
The riders are grouped into 6 groups according to age/ability. The slowest group is set off first and the remaining groups are set off at timed gaps determined by such factors as the number of riders in each group, the terrain of the course and weather conditions.
The average number of riders for each race is approximately 45-50. The largest group may have about 12 riders. Trained First Aiders will be present with appropriate equipment. In the event of any rider, receiving an injury that is beyond being dealt with by the First Aiders the Emergency Services will be called.
